Interviewing is my true passion in life. Honestly, getting to speak with incredible people who are gifted in their fields quite literally gives me energy. And I thought it would be great to highlight and summarize some of the wisdom I get from my weekly podcast right here.
Here are three things I learned from my interview with the founder of skincare company Bynacht, Jessica Hoyer.
Okay, first things first, I adore Jessica. You know how you start talking with someone and immediately think, “This is someone I could hang out with?” That’s Jessica.
Her skincare line Bynacht (which means “By Night” in German) is insane—I’m obsessed with their nighttime sleeping balm in particular—but what is even cooler is that she saw an opening in the market, left her cushy job in advertising, and launched her skin care company. And now her line is going to be opening in huge stores in America like Nordstrom and Neiman Marcus, including others.
During our conversation, Jessica explained that melatonin—which is present in tons of over the counter products here in the U.S. for both adults and kids—is not seen as the innocuous, why-not-use-it supplement as it is here. In fact, melatonin is considered a medication, and is banned in the UK as well as other countries.
Takeaway? I’m not going to be so cavalier about my, or my family’s, consumption of this powerful chemical.
From this same episode, Jessica talks about how the right aromatherapy ingredients can actually help improve the quality of your sleep—specifically, helping to extend the length of your deep sleep cycle.
She even says some of these ingredients actually cross the blood-brain barrier, helping to get into your system and calm the body and brain.
Let me say this: Before using Bynacht’s Perfect Nacht Sleeping Balm, I was not a believer in aromatherapy. Now, I use this every night without fail.
(And Jessica has this tip: If you’re really tired, apply to the soles of your feet. It should soak right in, and help you sleep even better!)
Jessica said, based on her extensive research into sleep and its impact on skin, there is nothing to replace the amount of sleep your body needs to function optimally. While some research suggests power naps can help us feel better in the short term, there’s nothing that replaces getting good sleep over a period of time.
Here’s something that the Bynacht team found that shocked me: “Just one hour too little sleep for a few days damages the skin and leads to more wrinkles.” (Source.)
Those are just a few tidbits, but you must listen to the entire episode to hear more not only on the science of great skin, but also Jessica’s jump from advertising to the skin care industry, and to how she manages entrepreneurship with motherhood. She’s a true gem!
