I’ve been a fan of Droplette for a while.
I call it a “skincare-infusing device.” Basically, it’s a handheld device that delivers powerful ingredients into your skin’s dermis—like, deep down, where they can actually get to work.
Check out my post on the device here for more basic info, but the TLDR version is: Two MIT scientists were working with patients who had compromised skin barriers, and needed to find ways to safely deliver important ingredients. They developed a technology that breaks down a liquid into a fine mist with particles small enough that, when applied to the skin via their high-velocity delivery system, can actually penetrate it.
You pop in your capsule, turn it on, and mist. That’s it!
They currently offer capsules with collagen, glycolic acid and retinol. Again, check out my last post for all the details you could want, and a huge discount code. (Hint: Use code WEGOTTATALK at checkout for $50 off your device.)
But in the meantime, let’s talk about another service Droplette will be offering soon that only makes this device more worth checking out.
Droplette is about to launch a virtual esthetician consult service.
What does that mean? Basically it’s a skin expert at your fingertips!
You’ll get a live video consultant with their resident esthetician who walks you through not only what Droplette routine is best for you, but also how it fits into the rest of your skincare routine.
So detailed and in-depth, which you know I am here for.
Let’s dig in!
Basically, it’s your own personal skincare routine, developed with your needs in mind, and sent right to your inbox.
Droplette has onboarded a licensed esthetician who, with the help of some information you provide, crafts an ideal skincare routine that not only includes the Droplette device, but all of the rest of your products you use.
To be honest, that was the most appealing part of this to me. Typically companies who offer virtual consults are only telling you about when and how to use their product. But with Droplette’s service, you’re not only figuring out which capsules from their line are great for you, but advice on other products you can use to complement its performance.
I just got the opportunity to try this service out for myself, and I was so impressed with the level of detail I got from my consulting esthetician, Erica.
And how it works is super simple. After you book, you’ll be sent an email with a link where you fill out a brief questionnaire. It asks you things like:
What’s your skin type?
What products does your current skincare routine include?
What are your skincare goals?
What are your skincare issues or problems?
…and a few more.
This is the part that’s super exciting, because this is where it gets personal.
I had my consult with Erica Young, Droplette’s resident esthetician, who’s been practicing for years both on her own and with a dermatologist, and graduated from the Catherine Hinds Institute for Esthetics.
When I signed on, honestly the first thing I noticed was her glowing skin. Like, iridescent! Ha. I figure if I’m taking advice from anyone on skin, it’s good that it’s from someone who literally looks lit from within.
I immediately felt at ease as she walked me through my responses to the intake questions, focusing specifically on what my routine currently looks like, and what my skincare goals are.
What I loved is that I had ample opportunity to ask questions. I wanted to know how to fit Droplette into an already-extensive skincare routine, and if I was using it correctly in my own routine.
By this point, I’ve had the Droplette for about six months, and I’ve been using it after cleansing and toning at night, and before whatever powerful anti-aging ingredient I have planned for the night. (I’m using only the collagen capsules, so they’re a good complement to some of my more powerful products, like retinol or acids.)
Erica let me know that I was, in fact, using the Droplette in the right place in my routine, and even told me that their retinol capsules might be a good replacement for the current retinol products in my routine.
Apparently Droplette’s retinol formulation is water-based, which means that it can be less irritating for the skin. It penetrates deeply into the skin. The technology is what is pushing it into the skin, but the water in the formula means that it is gentler for the skin.
She also gave specific recommendations for what moisturizers I should use to lock in my retinol—specifically, ones with ceramides. And she gave me options for any budget, from drugstore options to high-end. I was personally impressed with this; typically companies are hesitant to recommend things beyond their own offer, but what’s great about Erica is that she’s worked with tons of brands in her own practice, and brings that knowledge to your consult.
I’m including my whole recommended routine below, but just know that everyone’s recommendations will of course look different, depending on skin needs and issues.
Well, as you see above, you get an entire routine!
Within several weeks of your consult, you get an email with your customized, detailed routine that’s broken down into day and night, and day of the week. (Droplette and WGT are clearly on the same page when it comes to our love of a good detail!)
Even cooler, you also have the ability to book a follow-up meeting with Erica to check in. You can let her know how your routine is working, and ask about any tweaks you might want to make. Reach out via email, their live chat on their website, or just by emailing help@droplette.io.
One big question I’ve always had is, do you have to wash your face in the morning? I haven’t always done so; t typically I splash with water and wipe well with a clean towel, or use a gentle micellar water. But Erica says I might not even have to do that. Basically, she says when it comes to washing your face in the morning, it depends.
She says your skin just worked hard to rebalance and remoisturize overnight, so you don’t want to strip it all away in the morning, as you risk disrupting the barrier. If you don’t have acne and have normal skin, warm water and a washcloth should cleanse the face gently enough so that you can apply your morning products right after.
Mix SPF and a plain moisturizer to make it less whitening on the skin. Or, you can use one of my beauty product MVP’s—the genius Drunk Elephant D-Bronzi bronzing drops—to add in a little glow.
If you’re not using any other retinol products, use the retinol capsules 2-3 times per week, alternating with either the collagen capsules or another basic moisturizer.
Anyone with maskne or mild acne, Erica says, would be good candidates for their glycolic acid capsules. They “eat through” dead skin cells on the surface and help to speed up cell turnover, which can help to clean out your pores. Also, she says anyone with hyperpigmentation or melasma, or those who don’t exfoliate that often, would like these.
Erica recommends seeking out a moisturizer with ceramides to keep your skin hydrated. Some of her favorites are all linked below!
Also, if you have eczema, rosacea or dry skin, always patch test an area of your skin to check for sensitivity if you’re using the retinol or glycolic acid. I personally would recommend the collagen capsules for anyone who doesn’t want the exfoliating that comes with an acid or retinol; it simply leaves your skin with deep hydration and a nice glow.
It will be debuting soon!
