Packing.
Okay, maybe it’s technically not been that long, but it sure does feel like that. Especially when you have three kids running around and you are hoping–against every rational thought process–that it will go smoothly.
I’m not going to say it was “smooth” when we were loading up our entire kitchen into about 20 boxes yesterday, but besides the shattered wine glass, a partial flooding of our living room floor and a newly-walking baby who was hell-bent on dragging herself bodily across all parts of said dangerous/slippery floor?… then sure, you could say it was smooth. If by “smooth,” you mean a tour through Crazy Town.
But then? Then there was the Princess Fort.
There are times in our careers are parents that hit us hard, that take our breath away. And they’re often the little moments. Moments you would never think would even register end up being the very things that singe into the crevices of your heart. Such was yesterday, when our son and oldest daughter decided to play together so nicely that my husband and I were convinced Central Casting had switched them out for body doubles.
I mean, I’m not saying they’re constantly fighting and that this period of peace was rare, per se, but I am saying that most mornings start off with , “He took my paciiiiiiiii!!!!!” or “Tell her to stop hugging meeeeeeee!” …so this day of sweet interaction did come as a bit of a pleasant surprise.
Here’s how it went: My son took the extra large boxes, set them up in a perimeter in the front room, gathered up a snack of fruit bars and water, and told his little sister that he had built her a “princess garden,” just for her, and that she could not only sit and enjoy his snacks with him (GASP), but that she could also join in with him on reading his favorite books.
And he also told her, completely unprompted and quiet enough that I suspect he was hoping no one but her would actually hear, “You look beautiful, Princess Belle.”
And then I melted. All over the floor. Right next to all the spilled water from their picnic.
I think they kinda love each other after all.
Go enjoy your Little Moments, my friends. They’re there, if we look–and listen–closely enough.
