It can start to feel like a marathon whose finish line is, oh, I don’t know, in Uganda or something. Which is to say, very, very far away from where I currently am.
All of this to say, guys, I’m finally thisclose to having the baby almost totally weaned. We are down to one feed a day, which–yes, clearly there is still work to do–is a major accomplishment.
It was the only way she was going to sleep, whether at nap or bedtime, so I stuck with it. And for a lot longer than I ever anticipated.
I have lots of thoughts on extended nursing, and won’t get into those in this post (suffice it to say that I am now so much less judgmental about moms who choose it), but when I think about the fact that I nursed a child for almost two years, it surprises even me.

But now it’s time to move on. My boobs are now tapping out of this match. We need to wean because mama needs her life, and her chest, back.
I knew we needed to start small. For the times she was getting up overnight, I started sending in Andrew. And to be honest, it was messy at first. He was up with her for hours at a time one night (to which I say, Sorry honey!, and also, Welcome to my world.)
But after a few rough nights, she started to do something kind of crazy: She started sleeping better. One night there were three wake-ups, the next two, and then all of a sudden, the Magical Parenting Fairies smiled upon us and she slept through the night. Not once, not twice, but now, officially? For six nights in a row.
Like I said in my Instagram post about this, you’re probably all, “Sonni, she’s pretty much a teenager now so this isn’t really that big of a deal, so can it already.”
But we never officially sleep trained, and literally nothing has come easy to us in terms of getting our children to sleep through the night, so this came as an especially sweet an unexpected surprise.
Literally, I am giddy typing this next sentence: I have slept five nights in a row without having to wake up for the baby.
Great googly moogly, I think we are getting there. This little one is growing up. And while that tugs at my mama heart in all the sappy ways, it’s also kind of amazing.
