As women, we wear so many hats. In every stage of our lives, our responsibilities change. And honestly, it can feel like a lot. So how can you tap into your feminine energy for less grind and more goddess?
You know what I’m talking about: having to go from mom mode, to work mode, to wife mode, and back again. I wish there were a switch to flip to make it easier! Today’s post will hopefully help you with just that. My guest, Barbara Von Schmeling, is not only a 21-time martial arts champion and seventh degree black belt, but she’s also the founder of The Feminine Freedom, a movement reconnecting women to their inner “warrior goddesses.”
It’s important to mention that everyone contains a mix of feminine and masculine energies; think of them not as man and woman energies but rather action-driven energy (masculine) versus receptive energy (feminine). For women specifically, Barbara has identified this duality as the “warrior/goddess.”
In this post, I want to run you through some broad brushstrokes of our conversation, but I encourage you to listen to the whole thing to get not only more advice, but also for some fun off-the-cuff moments we share. She’s a blast to talk with!
On that note, let’s get into it. Head to Substack to hear the audio-only version of the episode or watch it here!
While the masculine energy is action-driven, the feminine energy’s strength comes from being—or in Barbara’s words, “enjoyment, love, nurturing, and being present.”
It’s tough because, over the course of any given day, we women often have to do it all: take care of the home, the kids, work outside the home, and be there for everyone’s emotional needs. This action mode leans more masculine.
When I feel like I’m in “go mode” too much, I have to be deliberate about balancing it out with a moment of just being. Even if I have just five or ten minutes, I will lie down on my bed, close my eyes, and take some deep breaths.
This was a big tip when it comes to a better sex life! At the in-person event, Barbara runs her guests through movement exercises where you take a deep breath and move to music.
I know how it sounds, and I can feel you cringing and thinking, “I would never do that!” But you don’t have to do this in front of other people, and it doesn’t have to be performative in any way.
I find that something as simple as taking a deep breath while stretching my arms upward and bringing them down with an exhale is enough to reignite a mind-body connection.
This “in the mood” playlist is also great!
As I mentioned before, we women wear a lot of hats over the course of our days.
If you listen to our conversation, Barbara outlines seven over the course of our lives: the Lass, the Lover, the Mother, the Master, the Mystic, the Warrior, and the Goddess.
Each archetype has its strengths, and you may find yourself shifting between different ones at any point in your life, no matter your age.
When Barbara was teaching this at her in-person conference, it occurred to me that, at 44, I still embody a lot of Lass energy, even while I’m approaching my Master era.
I love having ways to categorize all the growth period we experience as women. You’ll hear her dive into explanations of each archetype in the episode, where we get into more details about what each one looks like.
We all have intuition—that innate sense of what’s right and wrong—and sometimes, we ignore it to our detriment.
I know it took me well into my 30s to reliably listen to my intuition, and I still probably take longer than I should at times.
In the episode, you’ll hear Barbara mention that listening to our intuition regularly builds its strength over time, like a muscle.
I genuinely believe this is true; getting still for a moment and really “feeling” a decision can help you make the right one. And the more you listen, the stronger it gets, the quicker you react, and the less time you waste in the wrong energetic space!
