Welcome back to On the Record! Every month, I feature an amazing woman who embodies the phrase, “We contain multitudes.”
Erin Washington and I first met years ago when we guested on each other’s podcasts, and she’s the definition of hype girl. Erin’s energy is always positive, and she’s so open about both her challenges as well as her victories.
She’s shared her story about her struggle with an eating disorder and how she overcame it; talks all about the complexities of being a mother and an entrepreneur; and most recently opened up about her separation.
I hope you find the same wisdom and inspiration in her words as I did!
What’s one health and wellness trend you love and one you avoid? Why?
I love infrared saunas; I put a small one in my home gym. It’s the size of a phone booth, and I use it at least three times a week. Nothing feels better than sweating out all of the toxins and then showering them down the drain.
I hate (I repeat, HATE) cold plunges. For me, no health benefit will justify literally freezing. Ever.
What’s your most repurchased beauty item?
I love Rejuvalift tightening cream (you can get it on Amazon now!). It’s like Botox in a bottle for under eyes and forehead lines. I also always have Mighty Patch for blemishes and my CoverGirl Clean Fresh Brow enhancer on me. I don’t typically wear make-up, but my eyebrows are always on point.
What one small habit has made a big difference in how you feel?
Sleep! I’m a different person after nine hours of sleep (yes, nine!). I prioritize sleep over everything. My biggest flex is falling asleep before 9pm, and I will probably call and let you know about it the following morning.
What’s the last book you read?
My last book was by a recent thERINpy with Erin Washington guest, Who Deserves Your Love, by KC Davis, but I’d be lying if I said I read it. I’m an audiobook girl. I listen to books on my daily walks. If I have an author on my show, I have to read their book first. I guess I’m an overachiever.
What piece of clothing or accessory will we always find in your closet?
I love a bodysuit—my favorites are SKIMS. I pair them with ripped jeans and an oversized blazer. Throw on a nude heel (or Sneex, if I’m speaking!) and you have my typical wardrobe.
What does balance look like for you these days?
I used to not give myself much grace when it came to being a working mom. It was hard for me to shut off “work” and be fully present with my kids.
These days, I make sure I get my show recorded and edited during the school day, so I can lock in with my kids when they get home from school. When my head hits the pillow and I’ve knocked something off of my work schedule and spent quality time, locked in with my kids, that’s a win.
And don’t forget about you! Figure out your non-negotiable—something you need for you—and try to get it done first thing. For me, I have to go for a long walk. It clears my head, and I’m a better mom and overall person when I get back. I’m edgy and irritated if I don’t get it in in the morning.
What’s something you’ve learned to say no to?
Drinking, socially. I’m not completely sober but have really cut back and no longer feel pressure to drink just because everyone else is. A good night’s sleep and feeling great the next morning is more enticing to me.
What recent headline made you think?
I’m on a sober-curious journey, and reading articles about the effects of alcohol, like what it actually does in your body, has really opened my eyes.
I read recently that drinking alcohol during perimenopause is like pouring gasoline on your symptoms, and that really woke something up in me. Not worth it.
What serious conversations are you having with your friend group right?
I can’t stop asking other women if they are having the same perimenopause symptoms that I’m having. I have to make sure I’m not alone! And while we’re on this, does anyone else have to carry deodorant in their purse during this phase of life!? Asking for a friend…
Tell me why you think age is just a number.
I’m recently single and keep getting hit on by men in their 30’s! Clearly, they aren’t bothered by my age (almost 44!), and that’s exciting to me. I’ve never felt more confident than I do in my forties. Like a fine wine, baby!
