Let’s talk about the sacrifices we make for our kids.
The PG version of what I want to say is, “Motherhood is journey—emotionally, physically and spiritually.” The R-rated version of what I want to say is, Pregnancy can f*** your sh** up. Just a little! 😉
One of the big changes many women see after giving birth is a sudden thinning or loss of hair.
The American Academy of Dermatology says what we’re actually seeing isn’t necessarily a loss, but rather an “excessive shedding” caused by a sharp dropoff in estrogen we experience after delivery.
No matter the cause or how normal it is, it can be disconcerting; and I was one of those women who noticed my shedding. While I didn’t experience it to the degree of seeing fistfuls of hair on the shower drain, I did begin to notice thinning in one area in particular—around my temples—the spots I now affectionately refer to as my “cul de sacs,” which were most noticeable when I’d pull my hair off my face.
But thankfully I’ve come up with a routine that helps to address this thinning, and so far, it’s worked really well for me.
With my first two babies, I rode out the shedding and re-growth period naturally, and by about a year out, my hair returned to its normal state.
But after our third, I decided to be proactive about including supplements in my routine that might help speed up this process, as well as support my overall health.
Enter collagen. I’d seen plenty of ads for powdered collagen supplements by the time I actually got around to trying one.
I started using collagen in my morning coffee when the baby was about nine months old, and let me tell you, I noticed real deal results with this stuff.
Within 3-4 months of almost every day usage—I would stir my Vital Proteins into my morning coffee, with a dash of creamer—I noticed the baby hairs at my temple growing back. That area had fully regrown within months, and thankfully stayed that way.
While every person will experience different results from the same supplement, I can say that I affirmatively saw the result of using collagen in my routine fairly quickly.
Of course I did my own research, and talked to my health care providers, and I learned a lot about what collagen could be doing to help my system. Among other beneficial side effects, regular collagen supplementation provides your body with amino acids that essentially give your body the building blocks it needs to grow healthy hair. Read more here.
Additionally, many users of collagen supplements reports healthier-looking skin, and sometimes even improvements in digestion.
Like I said above, I typically take my collagen in my morning coffee. (Here’s a more detailed explanation.)
Specifics: I brew one cup of Nespresso (love the Stormio blend), put in a dollop of creamer, then blend 1 ½ to 2 scoops of either Vital Proteins Collagen Peptides or Alaya Naturals Multi-Collagen Protein Powder into the cup using my handheld milk frother.
If you like your coffee sweet, you can add a pinch of sugar as well. I like the Big Tree Farms Organic Brown Coconut Sugar.
As always, it varies by person, but I noticed real regrowth after 3-4 months. Consistency is key, so make sure you’re using it as frequently as possible to see the best results.
