Nights out with friends? I’m closer with Netflix these days.
But there is one sense of mine that is strangely sharper–and I mean waaaaay sharper–since having kids. And that is my sense of smell.
Guys? I can smell everything in a room within a ten-foot radius. All I’m saying is, don’t party with me if you haven’t showered in the past week (…says the lady who doesn’t have time to shower daily. #doublestandards)
But seriously. I can literally sniff a dirty diaper from across the room. A cup of coffee from across the house. A stinky toddler foot from ten feet away. You get the picture. Bloodhound-style.
And an incident the other night bore testament to my superhuman ability to smell. We were in the middle of (yet another) marathon baby-wake-up situation at about 2am when I smelled something… off… as I was nursing the baby. Please tune out now if you are eating or have a sensitive stomach.
It turns out that the funky smell I picked up on was coming from her ear. And if Dr. Google is to be believed (he and I have a love/hate relationship), that meant there was a chance my little night owl was battling an ear infection.
When they say 24/7 service for anything–and I’m talking anything, like even a question about how to cut your newborn’s fingernails, or something along the lines of, “What the heck is this rash all over my baby’s back??”–they mean it. Nothing is too small.
Normally, I would wait until the morning, put off until the last absolute minute calling the doctor and setting up an appointment, but no more. I just set up a call with Blueberry Pediatrics.
When I got offered the opportunity to partner with Blueberry to talk about their doctor on demand services, I was a little hesitant at first. Here’s why: I already have an awesome pediatrician who takes my calls day or night, and I usually have no trouble getting in to see him in person, either. And in the off chance we didn’t choose to see the kids’ pediatrician for a problem, we always have urgent care, right?
But after doing some more research, I realized Blueberry gives us a level of convenience that no other service can match. When they say 24/7 service for anything–and I’m talking anything, like even a question about how to cut your newborn’s fingernails, or something along the lines of, “What the heck is this rash all over my baby’s back??”–they mean it. Nothing is too small.
Here’s how it works. I’m able to set up an appointment by going to the online portal or app, and I’m guaranteed a call back within an hour from a pediatric doctor whose speciality is working with kids.
This isn’t a random doctor who’s assigned to triage for the weekend. It’s a board-certified pediatrician whose specialty is dealing with kids’ issues, and who is ready to answer any question you may have about your child’s health.
Do you ever worry about the possibility of your kids getting over-prescribed antibiotics, especially if you’re just calling in with an issue? I know when I was a kid, they just threw another bottle of “the pink stuff” at us every time we went in with an ear pain, which is so not what I want for my kids. You don’t have to have that worry with Blueberry. Their doctors are thorough and will ask all the right questions before deciding on a plan of action.
First of all, they can talk with you face-to-face through your device–whether that’s your laptop or computer–any time of day, as frequently as you’d like. And they also follow up to see how your child is doing.
You can even request to “see” the same doctor that you dealt with on previous visits. The team works together, and their goal is to give you a seamless experience where you get the most accurate information possible about the well-being of your child.
And here’s the coolest part–gadget fans are going to love this–when your kid is complaining of ear pain, which is one of the most common issues with young kids, you have your own otoscope that hooks up through your computer or phone (hellloooo, future! Nice to meet you!) And you can send images to the doctor for them to review in real time.
That means the doctor can quickly see if there’s an ear infection, without you having to leave the comfort of your home, and they can decide right then and there how best to treat it.
Seriously. HOW COOL IS THAT. (Also, I may or may not have tried out the otoscope in my own ear and got all ooooooooh!!! eeeeew…. with it before using it on my kids. Did you ever see what the inside of an ear looks like? Because GROSS. But also, WHOA.)
That otoscope is just one part of a Welcome Kit you get when you sign up, which also includes a digital thermometer, oximeter (measures the oxygen level in the blood), saline spray and more. It is everything you need to report back to your doctor, who can answer any questions for you with that information.
So what happened with us? When I put a sick call in for the baby about her ear, we got a call back within 20 minutes, the option to face-to-face chat with the doctor (I chose not to, and instead sent in a picture from the otoscope), and got the good news that–despite the funky smell–it was not looking like an ear infection, but probably just some drainage that we needed to keep an eye on.
Right now, it’s only $20/month for the service and welcome kit. And that means 24/7 access to a doctor for all of your kids–whether you have one or twenty. (Sidenote: If you have twenty kids, first of all GOD BLESS, and second of all, my regards to your vagina.)
There are some things you can’t buy in motherhood. (Sleep is one of them. Besides paying for a hotel if you know a way for me to pay for sleep PLEASE TELL ME AND I WILL RE-MORTGAGE THE HOUSE K THANKS.)
