Let’s talk about a product that is always and forever my first recommendation when it comes to skincare—a good SPF.
I’m an avowed fan of zinc oxide- or titanium dioxide-based sunblocks. (They’re called “physical blockers;” read more about the difference between chemical sunscreens and physical sunblocks here).
But one of the big problems is reapplying a physical sunblock throughout the day. Like, no one but no one wants to slather on a zinc oxide SPF over top of their skincare or makeup.
That’s why I was so excited to try out Seriously Fab’s Zinc It Over, a mist containing zinc oxide that’s designed to be sprayed over top of your already-done Face—whether it’s makeup or just skin care.
This product ticks all the boxes for me—a great physical sunblock, easy to apply, and helps me with that elusive need of reapplication. (Seriously, there’s no way to re- apply a zinc oxide SPF throughout the day unless you wash your face and start your skin care all over. NO THANKS!)
It was so appealing, I actually reached out to them to try it. And I’m so excited to bring you this review because legit, this stuff works.
This is a zinc oxide sunscreen in liquid form, dissolved into a fine, non-whitening mist, and it’s dispensed through a pump. The formula I’m showing in these pictures contains non-nano zinc oxide at a concentration of 5%.
This is lower than what a lotion with zinc oxide would contain, and that’s a good thing. Remember, this is designed to be sprayed on over top of your Done Face, so we don’t want too high of a concentration of zinc oxide, which would create a very unfortunate Casper situation.
It’s enhanced with antioxidants and phytonutrients as well, which help to boost the performance of the sun protective abilities of zinc oxide. (Why antioxidants matter, here.)
I road tested the Unscented version, though they also make formulas with a Tropical Floral and Citrus Passion scent.
It’s seriously so simple. Just spray it on top of your makeup or skin care, and that’s it! I put mine on in the afternoon, after my initial SPF application that I put on in the morning had likely lost some of its power.
Here’s how it works best:
Shake the bottle; hold it about 8-10 inches from your face; close your eyes and mouth; and spray toward your face. I use a total of 4-5 sprays each time.
You probably have the same question I did: Does it leave a white cast? You know we can’t be walking around town looking like a poltergeist; and I’m happy to report after trying this multiple times, there is absolutely no white cast. Shook.
Something about the way they mill the zinc oxide and blend it with the facial mist means that there is no trace of that typical zinc oxide cast, even though you’re still getting that good physical sun protection.
I have been using this in the afternoon, sprayed on top of my existing skin care (which usually consists of a physical sunblock and my beloved Drunk Elephant D-Bronzi drops), and I each time I use it, I can honestly say it blends seamlessly into my face.
My afternoon face, with hours-old SPF (and a ton of breakouts—but that’s for a different post!) This is right before I sprayed the Zinc It Over.
Right after spraying the Zinc It Over. You can see, it soaked right into my current face situation, and didn’t leave any white cast. Amazing. It even gives a layer of illumination, thanks to the zinc oxide, that I really like.
For anyone with a concern that this product doesn’t blend, I think the pictures speak for themselves. I honestly saw two small white dots that I simply patted with my fingertip, and they immediately soaked in. But overall, I’m incredibly pleased with the performance of this product, and will absolutely continue to use it.
For anyone who lives in a sunnier climate (like here in FL!), or if you’re headed to a beach vacation, I would absolutely suggest bringing this along. It’s small and portable, and it would work for kids too!
And finally, I don’t know of another product on the market that does what this does with such great results. Sure, you can get one of those SPF powder sticks—which I have also used—but those tend to make your face matte and your makeup cake-y, and this product doesn’t do that. It refreshes your SPF protection with the added bonus of a little dewiness.
