Looking to spring clean your beauty collection? How about trying something a little cleaner?

Full disclosure: The term “clean” for beauty products is much debated. Some companies use it to advertise products that are free of parabens only; others use that term to mean their products are free of a sweeping list of ingredients. (For example, see Beautycounter’s list.)

Either way, I think we can agree that the trend toward fewer, more proven-safe ingredients is sweeping the beauty industry.

So if you’re interested in trying some products that use some of these branded “cleaner” ingredients, I put together a list of clean beauty swaps for spring that have passed my completely unofficial test of Awesomeness.

Soleil Toujours Mineral Sunscreen SPF 30

Physical blocker (which means no chemical sunscreens to sink into your skin, yay!), doesn’t break you out, blends incredibly into skin without leaving a white cast. Perfect for under makeup.

Beautycounter Tint Skin Foundation

My standards are automatically lower for makeup products that are considered “clean.” But that standard needn’t apply to this foundation. It offers every bit of coverage, blend ability and lasting power as a regular foundation.

Drunk Elephant C-Firma Day Serum

I’ve written about my love of this serum before. Drunk Elephant’s founder committed to only using ingredients that are non-toxic. And you know what? As the company ethos page attests, natural isn’t always better. In fact, some natural ingredients can sensitize your skin, furthering your skin issues. That means–while you won’t find this in the organic section–the entire line is free of all kinds of nasties that will hurt your skin. What you’re left with? Safer, cleaner products that work.

MBeze Dabber Dust Underarm Powder

Yes, I agree that the term “underarm powder” is a touch vomit-inducing. This stuff, however, works. It soaks up better than any anti-perspirant, and using all natural ingredients like corn starch, to boot. No controversial aluminum in this guy.

EVOLVh UltraShine Moisture Shampoo and Conditioner

I’m gonna shoot you straight on this duo. When you apply the conditioner you won’t get that normal “slip” feeling you get with conditioners that contain silicone. But when you rinse? Soft as silk. And the moisture lasts through a blow dry and heat style. No sodium laurel sulfate in the shampoo, either. And it smells divine. Like, sniff-your-hair-while-at-your-work-desk divine. (Yes, I used to do that when I used this stuff. Gross? Maybe. True? Yes.)

Beautycounter Nourishing Cream Cleanser

If you wear any amount of makeup, it’s hard to find a cleanser that removes all of it and remains gentle on your skin. This manages to check both those boxes, and feels great on your skin too. If you want that extra clean feeling after using this, just follow up with a gentle toner.

Beautycounter Sheer Lipstick (shown in Terra)

Again–and I mean this in the best way possible–this doesn’t feel like a “natural” lipstick, and that’s a good thing. Moisturizing, shiny and true to the color in the tube, this is something you will find yourself reaching for time and again. Available in tons of shades and long-lasting, too!
